PolledHistory - 21 July: Persia
Hello! In the first usual episode of PolledHistory, after a week of votes, Persia won as the winning subject for this week. Let's begin!
Before we begin, I want to emphasize that there are multiple states relating to Persia (modern day Iran), but the one I specifically referred to in the poll, as the theme was Antiquity (which means Ancient Era), I am referring to the Persia usually referred to when saying it, the Achaenemid Empire.
The history of Persia begins in around 550 BC, with a man called Cyrus (specifically Cyrus II), who defeated his grandfather, who was the ruler of another empire, the Median Empire. He then conquered Media, and conquered basically the entire known world at the time, between Turkey and Pakistan. Cyrus is referred to in the Bible, as he sent back the Jews from the exile.
After Cyrus died in a battle, the next king, Cambyses II, who was Cyrus' son, became the ruler of Persia. He died early, but he conquered Egypt. Darius, who was not his son, but Darius was the great grandson of a man who was also the great grandather of King Cyrus, became ruler.
During the time of Darius, who reigned until 486 BC, the empire reached its largest size. He divided the empire into provinces, and was one of the first rulers to implement the provincial system. After he died, his son Xerxes beame king of the Achaenemids (Achaenemid refers to the dynasty of the Persian kings).
Xerxes aas known for attacking Greece, which had limited success for him. However, he was one of the last relevant kings of Persia, and after him was a slow decline of the Persian Empire. Xerxes is also a figure in the Bible. By this time, though religious freedom was intact, Zoroastrianism was the state religion of the empire.
After Xerxes came a list of lesser known kings. After Xerxes was Artaxerxes, after Artaxerxes Xerxes II, after him Sogdianus, after him Darius II, after him Artaxerxes II, after him Artaxerxes III, afrer him Arses, afrer him Darius III. All these kings ruled a still large Persia, but it was on the decline.
By Darius III, however, things became a sharp decline. He reigned six years, from 336 BC to 330 BC. The reason why was because of the invasion from Macedonia, which was in modern day Greece, under Alexander the Great, who invaded all of Persia, and the known world, in just a few years with minimal casualties. Darius III was killed by one of his officials, and he was the last king of Persia. And Greece, specifically Macedonia, took its place.
That was the simplified history of Persia! Thanks for reading. The form: https://forms.gle/gwdpu4CuCu4ogAtC9
