PolledHistory: 29Sep-6 Oct: WW1
Hello!
Sorry that last week I forgot to provide the poll. I thought that WW1 is a very common history topic and that I should cover it today.
World War One, or the Great War was a conflict that was waged between 1914 and 1918, and there are two main alliances/factions that fought: the Central Powers and the Allied Powers, or the Allies. Let's see the teams first.
Allied Powers
France, United Kingdom, Russia, Italy, United States, Japan, etc
Central Powers
Germany, Austria Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, etc
Let's begin. Before WW1, Prussia, one of the states in the old Holy Roman Empire, strengthened and under Otto von Bismarck, united Germany under one Prussian banner, forming the German Empire, a strong empire that rivaled Britain's huge colonial empire. Before 1914, the Balkan states were embroiled in several crises and wars, causing the Balkan Wars, both against the Ottoman Empire, a Turkish state, and each other (the other Balkan nations). There was certainly an interesting period before World War 1.
Then, a trigger was activated that would cause World War 1. The heir of Austria Hungary's emperor, Archduke Frans Aferdinand visited the city of of Sarajevo (present day the capitsl city in Bosnia Herz.). An assasin named Gavrilo Princip fired two pistol shots, killing Franz Ferdinand in his car. Gavrilo Princip was Serbian, Austria Hungary encouraged anti-Serb riots and lead mass killings of Serbians and persected them, leading Austria eventually into war with Serbia. Russia agreed to assist Serbia, joining the war. Germany then joined the war. Britain and France soon also joined.
The German Empire had a plan called the "Schlieffan Plan" to quicky attack France and Paris in short enough time - and then attack the east - as Germany had to attack on both sides - to the east (Russia) and to the west (United Kingdom, France). Germany also knew that Russia would take lots of time to organize and attack, so this plan was used. However, the United Kingdom decides to stay out of the war at first. Germany is pleased with the neutrality of the UK.
The french-german border was heavily defended, so the Germans went through Belgium, but the Belgians fought back. And the United Kingdom was annoyed that the Germans were disturbing Belgian neutrality, so they joined the war. Once the Germans had finally went through Belgium, they began to invade France, but by that time Russia was ready. Austria Hungary tried to repel them but failed.
Meanwhile, in the western frontier, the Germans were already near Paris, but after the Battle of the Marne, the allies outflankrd the Germans and the Germans retreated. Then things came to a standstill with the advent of trench warfare. Trench warfare made the war slow and gruelling, as the trenches were extremely dangerous.
The next thing both sides did was to find new frontiers to break the standstill. In Africa, the allied powers chased away the German colonial influence and so in the Pacific did Australia attack German New Guinea. The Ottomans, a declining empire, wanted to join, seeing it as an oppurtunity, joining the Central Powers.
But the Otomans failed in their campaigns. The Germans had no progress so they decided to use immoral warfare by employing chemical weapons and zeppelin - even they sank civilian ships with submarines, making the United States angry (since there was American people there). Bulgaria also joined the Centeal Powers, and with other Central Powers help, they took over Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro.
By 1916, the battle of Verdun took place where there were many casualties. At the Battle of the Somme, even more casualties were found. In Somme there already were British tanks. The Germans began to go further into Russian territory. By 1917,Europe was exhausted and all the nations were weakeaned. The question is, who will get destroyed first from their own exhaustion?
Russia collapsed first and the Russian Revolution began, where the Russian monarchy was taken over by the Bolsheviks, and Russia became communist. In the same year, the United States joined and the Western Frontier collapsed, and Germnay surrendered. The end of WW1 was marked with the punishing Treaty of Versailles. Austria Hungary capitulated and Germany punished. The Ottomans also collapsed.
